The Onward Writing Competition began in June 2009 when a potential volunteer rang to offer her help to Theatre Royal Onward. As the charity does not yet own the theatre, volunteers wishing to decorate or make repairs have had to be turned away, for the present. However, Cathy Vella holds an MA in creative writing from Salford University and was able to help right there and then, with the assistance of trustee Muriel Nichols. She was also able to approach Dr Judy Kendall and Ursula Hurley of the University, eminent, specialist writers who offered to help TRO, by judging the entries.
Despite the fact that the venture was new to all but Cathy and the Judges, a respectable 99 entries were received. This grew to 133 for the second competition.
Cathy has had to leave as she takes on extra family commitments and puts her Masters Degree in Creative Writing to good use. The competition will now be run by founder members Muriel and Brian Nichols, with helpers from TRO. With Muriel and Brian running the contest alongside, but independent of TRO, gift aid can be claimed when funds are donated to the main charity and selling the books is possible, without the formation of a separate, TRO, trading company. Accounts can be provided. Now in its third year a lot about running competitions and preparing the anthology has been learned.
