Wetherspoons

An all day promotion and book sale took place at Wetherspoon’sThe Cotton Bale – Hyde on Saturday the 4th December. TRO are very grateful to Darren and his staff for their help and offer of support for the future, including a chance to keep up with the news.

Guests included actress Genevieve Cleghorn, who travelled from Cambridge and Martin de Mello from Commonword. There was news coverage and interest from the Wetherspoon management. These Cotton Bale community events will not affect their support of their national charity.

On display, along with updates on the Theatre Royal’s progress, were details and photos of some of the 61 theatres demolished, unnecessarily, in the past 35 years. Hopefully these will move people to really want to fight (and write!). Also details of a new trust Save Britain’s Theatres were available.

Get the Children Writing

This competition went very well with children reading their stories out for Radio Tameside. It was just part of another successful day of promotion and fun at Wetherspoon’s. With thanks to all their staff and to Darren the manager for use of the garden. Thanks also to 4th Hyde Scouts for use of their marquee.

Watch Out for Heritage Open Day  on Saturday the 10th September we hope people will turn out to queue, just as people queued at the theatre for the Box Office to open (something I did in the fifties and sixties). We are hoping that, as then, the queue will go right round the block. The owner will not open the theatre. However, English Heritage, who organise these days and provide insurance look upon this as a re-creation of history and therefore an event they can support. We hope to gain publicity and more members, and the chance to speak to young people, of the benefits lost to them, which we hope to bring back. In the area? Come and join us.

A Success

People queue past the Festival Theatre and the old Post Office. Opposite, is the Town Hall.

Famous cartoon artist Tony Husband is creating a drawing of the scene.
